Programm

In Japanese culture, Takumi represents the pursuit of excellence through craftsmanship, precision, and meticulous attention to every detail. This principle lies at the heart of this hands-on course in contemporary periodontal surgery.

Participants will not simply study surgical protocols — they will practice the key surgical steps themselves, from precise incision and atraumatic flap elevation to meticulous suturing and stable wound closure.

A dedicated section focuses on contemporary periodontal tissue regeneration. Participants will explore a clinical decision-making algorithm and gain hands-on experience with the Double-Sided Entire Papilla Preservation Technique (DEPP), a technique developed by Dr. Yudai Ogawa.

Particular attention will be given to preserving tissue integrity and blood supply, selecting the optimal flap design, ensuring the stability of the regenerative material, and achieving predictable healing.

This course is designed for clinicians who want to go beyond standard surgical protocols and learn to work with greater precision, delicacy, and predictability — following the principles of Japanese craftsmanship, where mastery is built through control of every movement and meticulous attention to every detail.

Advantages of the "Hands-on Workshop" participation option:
– Participation in the scientific program
– Coffee break
– Notes and handouts
– Certificate of participation
– ADA credits available upon request
– Lunch
– Priority seats in the venue
– Distinct reception counter
– VIP certificate
– VIP badge

Program

Part 1. The Japanese Art of Delicate Surgery

Mastering Incision, Flap Elevation, and Suturing.

Inspired by the Japanese spirit of Takumi — the pursuit of precision through craftsmanship — this hands-on session focuses on the most essential elements of periodontal surgery: delicate incision, atraumatic flap elevation, and precise suturing.

Participants will practice refined surgical techniques designed to preserve tissue integrity, maintain blood supply, and achieve stable and predictable wound closure.

Part 2. Contemporary Periodontal Regeneration

Clinical Decision-Making and the Papilla Preservation Technique.

Participants will learn a contemporary clinical decision-making algorithm for periodontal regenerative therapy based on defect morphology, soft tissue conditions, and surgical accessibility.

The practical session will include the complete surgical protocol for the Double-Sided Entire Papilla Preservation Technique (DEPP), a technique developed by Dr. Yudai Ogawa, with a focus on flap design, interdental papilla preservation, regenerative material placement, and stable wound closure.

Exercise 1. Precision Incision, Flap Elevation, and Suturing

Model: Porcine mandible

This exercise focuses on the most fundamental and critical surgical skills required for all periodontal and implant procedures.

Participants will learn and practice delicate incision design, precise flap elevation, and microsurgical suturing techniques through both lecture and hands-on training using a porcine mandible.

Exercise 2. Minor GBR

Model: Porcine mandible

This exercise is designed to perform precise and reproducible minor guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures.

Participants will practice flap management, membrane adaptation, stabilization, and tension-free closure using a porcine mandible.

Exercise 3. Periodontal Regenerative Therapy

Model: Custom-made original defect model

This exercise focuses on periodontal regeneration for isolated intrabony defects using a custom-made model.

The session begins with a lecture explaining the decision tree, biological principles, and standard protocols of regenerative therapy, as reported with Cortellini and Aslan.

This is followed by step-by-step surgical video analysis of an actual clinical case, and finally a hands-on procedure replicating the same defect morphology on the original model.
