Risks of dental anesthesia: Based on a COEM study

According to a COEM study on Complications associated with anesthesia buccal, can be any of the following.

TRISMUS.

It is a spasm of the masticatory muscles that prevents the normal opening of the oral cavity. It may be associated with a reflex action due to pain caused by bruising, bleeding or trauma to the internal pterygoid muscle during the injection applied to the mandible.

PARESTHESIA.

The patient notes a numbness or partial loss of local sensitivity.

You may also feel burning and tingling, even after the anesthesia has worn off.

FACIAL NERVE PARALYSIS, VII CRANIAL NERVE.

The paralysis can be immediate or delayed, caused by inadvertently puncturing the deep lobe of the parotid gland, accidentally injecting anesthesia when a mandibular technique or inferior alveolar nerve block is being performed.

PAIN DURING THE PUNCTURE AND INJECTION.

It happens after the repeated use of the needle in a patient to whom several techniques are being applied, and therefore, performing the rapid injection of acid anesthetic solutions, with cold anesthetics or simply when careless injections are made with too much anesthesia.

SELF-INDUCED SOFT TISSUE INJURIES.

Those caused unconsciously by the patient when, for example, he bites himself under the effect of anesthesia, since a part of his face is numb and he does not realize it.

It usually happens with children or patients with intellectual disabilities or disorders in psychomotor development.

SYSTEMIC TOXICITY.

The incidence of systemic toxicity in dental anesthesia is low:

Bupivacaine combined with the epidural technique is the one with the highest rate, specifically 33% of cases.

ALLERGIC REACTIONS.

Allergic reactions are very rare, accounting for less than 1% of reported side effects. Allergy to dental anesthesia causes hives, edema, itching, tearing or rhinitis. Very rarely do they progress to adults, such as an anaphylactic reaction.

OTHER POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF DENTAL ANESTHESIA.

• Nausea or even vomiting.
• Headache.
• Sweats and/or tremors.
• Confusion, delirium, or even hallucinations.
• Difficulty speaking.
• Dry mouth or sore throat
• Feeling of dizziness and tiredness.
