Respirar por la boca en vez de hacerlo por la nariz modifica la postura de la cabeza, los maxilares y la lengua. Al abrir la boca la mandíbula rota hacia abajo y hacia atrás, generando un trastorno en la tonicidad muscular y en el crecimiento mandíbular, ya que el cóndilo de la mandíbula se encuentra en continua compresión inhibiendo su crecimiento; además la lengua adopta una posición baja y no se coloca en el paladar, cuando la lengua se coloca correctamente en el paladar es un estímulo para el crecimiento del hueso maxilar en sentido transversal. Al respirar por la boca, la falta de apoyo de la lengua en el paladar produce que no se desarrolle transversalmente.
