1. The indication, occlusal design and handling will be discussed for
– relaxation splint;
– stabilization splint;
– reposition splint;
– decompression splint;
– verticalization splint.
2. Given the indication is correct occlusal splints can be mighty tools in the pre-treatment of craniomandibular disorders.
3. The primary advantage of the occlusal splint over other types of occlusal treatment is that the occlusion can be altered without making it necessary to then irreversiblymodify the patient`s dentition.
4.This lecture will not only focus on the preconditions for a successful therapy using different types of occlusal splints, but will also discuss the limitations and problems of this kind of occlusion-related treatment.

Spezialist für Prothetik, kraniomandibuläre Störungen (CMD) und orofaziale Schmerzen mit über 45 Jahren kombinierter klinischer, akademischer und Forschungserfahrung.
Umfangreiche klinische Expertise in Differenzialdiagnostik von Kopf-, Gesichts- und Nackenschmerzen dentalen Ursprungs, konservativer Behandlung von CMD und okklusionsbedingten Dysfunktionen sowie komplexer prothetischer Rehabilitation funktionell und parodontal kompromittierter Gebisse. Ehemaliger Direktor des Department of Prosthodontics am Center for Dental Medicine der Marburg University, wo er umfassende Behandlungsprotokolle für CMD-Patienten und geriatrische Prothetik etablierte.
Visiting Assistant Professor und Visiting Professor an der TMJ and Orofacial Pain Clinic der University of California San Francisco (1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996) mit Professor Charles McNeill. Internationaler Dozent mit ausgiebigen Präsentationen in Deutschland und Europa über CMD-Diagnostik und -Therapie, Okklusionskonzepte, Implantatprothetik und Behandlungsplanung für komplexe Fälle. Mitherausgeber der Dentalzeitschrift "Teamwork" und Mitglied der Editorial Boards mehrerer deutscher Dentalpublikationen einschließlich ZWR und Dental Dialogue. Mitglied der Academy for Practice and Science der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Zahn-, Mund- und Kieferheilkunde (DGZMK) seit 1990.
DMD von der Universität Göttingen, Deutschland (1986). Ausbildung zum Zahntechniker (1977-1980). Promotion (Dr. med. dent.) mit Dissertation über paraokklusale Axiographie in der Funktionsanalyse (1987, Universität Göttingen). Habilitation in CMD-Diagnostik und -Therapie (1994, Universität Göttingen). Ausgezeichnet mit dem Kemptner Förderpreis der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Funktionsdiagnostik der DGZMK (1987). Ernannt zum "Qualified Specialist for Prosthodontics" durch die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Prothetische Zahnmedizin und Biomaterialien (DGZPW, 1997).
